{"id":5239,"date":"2011-12-21T09:06:13","date_gmt":"2011-12-21T14:06:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/?p=5239"},"modified":"2011-12-27T09:37:17","modified_gmt":"2011-12-27T14:37:17","slug":"is-it-ethical-for-the-ethics-panel-to-meet-behind-closed-doors","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/2011\/12\/21\/is-it-ethical-for-the-ethics-panel-to-meet-behind-closed-doors\/","title":{"rendered":"Is it ethical for Cuomo&#8217;s ethics panel to meet behind closed doors?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As Governor Andrew Cuomo&#8217;s new ethics panel begins meeting, the group has raised eyebrows by holding two meetings &#8212; one on a conference call and the other in a closed executive session &#8212; without public scrutiny.<\/p>\n<p>This from <a href=\"http:\/\/empire.wnyc.org\/\">WNYC&#8217;s political blog The Empire<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The Associated Press\u2019 Michael Gormley then asked why the commission felt  the need to go into special executive, non-public session\u2013what was the  specific reason. [Chair Janet] DiFiore essentially told Gormley, \u201cBecause I said so.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Actually, DiFiore&#8217;s statement was a little more nuanced than that.\u00a0 Here it is:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>I think  all of us would agree, given the nature of the work here, we should  endeavor to do as much of our work in open view and have the public be  able to tune in and hear what we\u2019re thinking, and talking about and  working on.<\/p>\n<p>But there are some matters that requires confidentiality and  I think that as we go we will figure out what those matters are.<\/p>\n<p>Today,  the matters that are on our agendas, that we will discuss in executive  and closed session meeting, I think are appropriate.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>As a journalist, I have to say that doesn&#8217;t pass the sniff test.<\/p>\n<p>The public needs to know at the very least what issues are being raised behind closed doors.
