{"id":5292,"date":"2012-01-06T08:27:15","date_gmt":"2012-01-06T13:27:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/?p=5292"},"modified":"2012-01-09T08:59:48","modified_gmt":"2012-01-09T13:59:48","slug":"morning-read-local-school-chief-chides-cuomo-for-education-hubris","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/2012\/01\/06\/morning-read-local-school-chief-chides-cuomo-for-education-hubris\/","title":{"rendered":"Morning Read:  Local school chief chides Cuomo for education hubris"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As <a href=\"http:\/\/www.northcountrypublicradio.org\/news\/story\/19074\/20120106\/mixed-response-to-cuomo-s-state-of-state-education-goals\">Karen DeWitt reports this morning for NCPR<\/a>, Governor Andrew Cuomo is taking on the state&#8217;s public education system, calling for a more kid-focused approach.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Cuomo set up a potential fight with the education establishment during  an otherwise mostly congenial State of the State speech, when he chided  them for what he says is putting their own interests before those of  school children.<\/p>\n<p>He told the crowd that superintendents, principles,  teachers, and janitors have their own lobbyists.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEven the bus drivers have lobbyists,\u201d said Cuomo. \u201cThe only group without lobbyists are the students.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>But not everyone appreciated the governor&#8217;s claim that he would serve as the chief advocate for New York school kids.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The President of the teachers unions does take issue with Cuomo\u2019s  claim that the governor is the only true lobbyist for the school  children.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStudents have lobbyists in their parents, they have  lobbyists in terms of their teachers who see them every day,\u201d said  [Richard] Iannuzzi. \u201cAnd they could use a lobbyist in government, so we welcome  the governor to join us.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Tupper Lake school superintendent Seth McGowan went a step farther, according to the <a href=\"http:\/\/pressrepublican.com\/0100_news\/x58543454\/School-chief-criticizes-governor\">Plattsburgh Press Republican<\/a>, chiding the governor for his hubris on the issue.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Seth McGowan, who heads Tupper Lake Central School District, was  insulted by that part of the State of the State address on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;What  gives him the credentials to be a lobbyist for the kids?&#8221; McGowan told  the Press-Republican. &#8220;Does he have any experience or knowledge of  public education in New York state?
