{"id":5309,"date":"2012-01-10T20:00:19","date_gmt":"2012-01-11T01:00:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/?p=5309"},"modified":"2012-01-16T10:41:32","modified_gmt":"2012-01-16T15:41:32","slug":"did-harrietstown-officials-really-lose-4000-gallons-of-gas-at-the-adirondack-airport","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/2012\/01\/10\/did-harrietstown-officials-really-lose-4000-gallons-of-gas-at-the-adirondack-airport\/","title":{"rendered":"Did Harrietstown officials really lose 4,000 gallons of gas at the Adirondack airport?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A scathing<a href=\"http:\/\/www.osc.state.ny.us\/localgov\/audits\/towns\/2012\/harrietstown.pdf\"> report from New York state&#8217;s Comptroller, issued Tuesday<\/a>, claims that Harrietstown officials mismanaged capital projects and bungled the accounting for fuel sales at the Adirondack Regional Airport in Lake Clear.<\/p>\n<p>One of the conclusions in the document is that town officials &#8220;could not account for&#8221; nearly three thousand gallons of Jet A fuel, and another thousand gallons of aviation grade gasoline, with a cash value totaling roughly $15,000.<\/p>\n<p>The Comptroller study also found lax oversight for millions of dollars worth of capital projects.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt a time when local governments should be paying even closer attention to their finances, our audit identified numerous financial missteps that went undetected for many years,\u201d DiNapoli said, in a press statement.<\/p>\n<p>His office went on to argue that mismanagement of airport projects left a $200,000 &#8220;hole&#8221; in the town&#8217;s general fund.<\/p>\n<p>In a letter written in mid-December, Harrietstown supervisor Larry Miller acknowledged that &#8220;discrepancies existed&#8221; in fuel tank inventories.<\/p>\n<p>But he blamed problems with the set up of the fuel tanks and suggested that temperature changes at the site might also have affected the measurements.<\/p>\n<p>Miller conceded that changes needed to be made.\u00a0 &#8220;The Town Board acknowledges that airport management did not keep inventory records for unleaded gas and diesel fuels and understands the necessity to do so,&#8221; Miller wrote.<\/p>\n<p>Management was a major issue during last November&#8217;s budget session in Harrietstown, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.adirondackdailyenterprise.com\/page\/content.detail\/id\/527678\/H-town-adopts-budget-after-contentious-hearing.html\">according to the Adirondack Daily Enterprise.<\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Several speakers lamented that the Adirondack Regional Airport has  become too big a drain on town taxpayers.
