{"id":5311,"date":"2012-01-11T06:40:18","date_gmt":"2012-01-11T11:40:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/?p=5311"},"modified":"2012-01-16T10:41:10","modified_gmt":"2012-01-16T15:41:10","slug":"morning-read-freight-train-into-adk-high-peaks-sparks-debate","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/2012\/01\/11\/morning-read-freight-train-into-adk-high-peaks-sparks-debate\/","title":{"rendered":"Morning Read:  Freight train into Adk High Peaks sparks debate"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A plan to reopen a historic freight line that extends from North Creek to the old Tahawus mine on the eastern slopes of the High Peaks is sparking more controversy and debate.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/poststar.com\/news\/local\/adirondack-council-may-join-opposition-to-reopening-rail-line\/article_8d4c17d6-37c3-11e1-a74c-001871e3ce6c.html\">Glens Falls Post Star <\/a>is reporting that more environmental activists are considering trying to block the project.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We believe Protect has raised some important issues of ownership, compatibility, environmental impact and legal precedent with regard to the plan to reopen the spur all of the way to Tahawus,&#8221; John Sheehan, spokesman for the Adirondack Council&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>The group has already drawn opposition from the group Protect the Adirondacks, and sparked questions from state Environment officials.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, local officials in Essex County voted this week unanimously to support the project, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.adirondackdailyenterprise.com\/page\/content.detail\/id\/528686\/County-pledges-support-for-freight-line.html?nav=5008\">according to the Adirondack Daily Enterprise<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;I think it is crazy that the environmentalists are out there wanting to  tear the tracks up on that line that is so important to the economic  recovery in that area,&#8221; said Moriah town Supervisor Tom Scozzafava.<\/p>\n<p>According to Scozzafava, his community lost about 7 miles of rail years  ago &#8220;because the town at that time did not have enough foresight to see  the importance that that railroad may have played in our economic  recovery.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Trains have emerged as a new flashpoint in the debate over the Adirondack Park&#8217;s future, with active scrums now underway over this freight line, and over the future of a tourism train operated in the Tri-Lakes region.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A plan to reopen a historic freight line that extends from North Creek to the [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":12,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":[],"categories":[1],"tags":[22,10,4802],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/5311"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/12"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=5311"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/5311\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=5311"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=5311"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=5311"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
