{"id":5547,"date":"2012-02-21T18:00:26","date_gmt":"2012-02-21T23:00:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/?p=5547"},"modified":"2012-02-21T15:00:08","modified_gmt":"2012-02-21T20:00:08","slug":"single-moms-and-pta-dads","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/2012\/02\/21\/single-moms-and-pta-dads\/","title":{"rendered":"Single moms and PTA dads"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This weekend\u2019s New York Times featured two stories that caught my eye: that the majority of women who <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2012\/02\/18\/us\/for-women-under-30-most-births-occur-outside-marriage.hatml?pagewanted=2&amp;sq=women&amp;st=cse&amp;scp=4\">give birth<\/a> under the age of 30 are unmarried, and that PTAs across the country are seeing an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2012\/02\/19\/fashion\/fathers-Shift-the-Dynamics-of-the-PTA.html?adxnnl=1&amp;src=recg&amp;adxnnlx=1329741446-HlpO7f37Apqmxa8BZaaMUw\">influx of dads<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>These developments, plus the raging debate over whether Catholic institutions are obligated to provide their employees with health care that includes birth control, are all part of how our culture is renegotiating changing ideas of gender and family.<\/p>\n<p>According to the New York Times, that renegotiation has a lot to do with economics.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cMarriage has become a luxury good,\u201d said. Frank Furstenberg, a sociologist at the University of Pennsylvania.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>And:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cExplanations for marital decline start with home economics: men are worth less than they used to be.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>What do you think?
