{"id":5592,"date":"2012-03-01T17:12:29","date_gmt":"2012-03-01T22:12:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/?p=5592"},"modified":"2012-03-02T10:24:16","modified_gmt":"2012-03-02T15:24:16","slug":"could-republicans-lose-women-in-2012","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/2012\/03\/01\/could-republicans-lose-women-in-2012\/","title":{"rendered":"Could Republicans &#8220;lose&#8221; women in 2012?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A top Rick Santorum donor argues that women who want cheap contraception should pinch an aspirin between their knees.<\/p>\n<p>The country&#8217;s most prominent conservative voice, Rush Limbaugh, argues that women who want their contraception covered by health insurance should offer payback to men.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If we are going to pay for your contraceptives and thus pay for you to  have sex, we want something,&#8221; Limbaugh said, on his syndicated radio show.\u00a0 &#8220;We want you to post the videos online so we  can all watch.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>While those salvos are being fired in the media-sphere, Republican leaders in Congress are pushing a bill that would allow bosses across the country to decide whether or not to cover contraception and other types of healthcare that clash with their moral beliefs.<\/p>\n<p>According to the widely respected Guttmacher Institute, research indicates that roughly 90% of sexually active, fertile women use contraception.<\/p>\n<p>So while contraception isn&#8217;t a top-tier issue for most Americans, this is an issue that cuts broadly.\u00a0 It&#8217;s also apeculiar fight for the GOP to pick in an already fragile election year.<\/p>\n<p>Women make up 53% of all voters.\u00a0 In 2008, Mr. Obama won 56% of the women&#8217;s vote &#8212; that&#8217;s a whopping 7% better than his level support among male voters.<\/p>\n<p>Democrats are clearly convinced that they can boost their gender advantage, leveraging recent controversies over Planned Parenthood, contraception, and prenatal testing.<\/p>\n<p>And there are signs that they could find a real opening here.<\/p>\n<p>A recent<a href=\"http:\/\/images.politico.com\/global\/2012\/02\/bg_46_tables.html\"> 2012 poll<\/a> shows women registered to vote favoring the Democratic Party by a 47-40% margin &#8212; and among working women the gap was even bigger, a whopping 50-37% split.<\/p>\n<p>If these controversies tilt women more toward Democrats, it would reshape this year&#8217;s elections.\u00a0 It&#8217;s one thing to win strong African American or Hispanic support.\u00a0 Those are still minorities.\u00a0 But in voting terms, women are the majority.<\/p>\n<p>So what do you think?\u00a0 I&#8217;m particularly interested to hear from Republicans.\u00a0 Is this a good issue to be pushing in a campaign year?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A top Rick Santorum donor argues that women who want cheap contraception should pinch an [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":12,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":[],"categories":[1],"tags":[6548,6550,20],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/5592"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/12"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=5592"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/5592\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":5612,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/5592\/revisions\/5612"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=5592"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=5592"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=5592"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
