{"id":567,"date":"2009-03-09T07:17:00","date_gmt":"2009-03-09T11:17:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/2009\/03\/09\/losing-our-religion\/"},"modified":"2010-12-13T14:36:11","modified_gmt":"2010-12-13T19:36:11","slug":"losing-our-religion","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/2009\/03\/09\/losing-our-religion\/","title":{"rendered":"Losing our religion"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>One of the under-reported phenomena of modern American life is the rapid expansion of secularism.<\/p>\n<p>Journalists have been captivated by the spectacle of mega-churches and the expansion of conservative Christian political power.<\/p>\n<p>But demographers and pollsters have long been observing a sharp trend in the opposite direction: more and more Americans say they have &#8220;no religion.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The latest American Religious Identification Survey shows that the transition to a more &#8220;European&#8221; secular society continues.<\/p>\n<p>15% of Americans now say they have no religious faith &#8212; that&#8217;s a number equal to the percentage of people who say they&#8217;re Baptists.<\/p>\n<p>And while the number of Protestant Christians has been declining sharply in recent decades, the &#8220;faithless&#8221; group has nearly doubled since 1990.<\/p>\n<p>We here in the Northeast are leading the transformation. In Vermont, an astonishing 34% of people say they have no significant religion in their lives.<\/p>\n<p>This from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/hostednews\/ap\/article\/ALeqM5iYmd8ToiQxh6WjqwGAnsk4qJ1QRQD96Q9FE00\">AP<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Still, the study found that the numbers of Americans with no religion rose in every state. &#8220;No other religious bloc has kept such a pace in every state,&#8221; the study&#8217;s authors said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Where will this lead?
