{"id":5802,"date":"2012-04-12T05:24:53","date_gmt":"2012-04-12T09:24:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/?p=5802"},"modified":"2012-04-12T09:03:31","modified_gmt":"2012-04-12T13:03:31","slug":"morning-read-second-guessing-the-rooftop-highway-i98","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/2012\/04\/12\/morning-read-second-guessing-the-rooftop-highway-i98\/","title":{"rendered":"Morning Read:  Second-guessing the Rooftop Highway-I98"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_5806\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/files\/2012\/04\/transmap.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5806\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-5806\" title=\"transmap\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/files\/2012\/04\/transmap-300x178.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"178\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/files\/2012\/04\/transmap-300x178.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/files\/2012\/04\/transmap-150x89.jpg 150w, https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/files\/2012\/04\/transmap-450x267.jpg 450w, https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/files\/2012\/04\/transmap.jpg 949w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-5806\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">2001 Rooftop Highway Study Map (click to enlarge)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>St. Lawrence County is asking local governments around the North Country to chime in with support for a proposed interstate highway that would link Plattsburgh and Watertown, but not everyone is climbing aboard.<\/p>\n<p>This week, town officials in Malone tabled the request, in part because they don&#8217;t think funding is available for the project.\u00a0 This from the <a href=\"http:\/\/pressrepublican.com\/0100_news\/x333968587\/Village-wont-back-I-98-idea\">Plattsburgh Press-Republican<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Village Board members support the concept of Interstate 98, which has  also been known as the &#8220;Northern Tier Expressway&#8221; and the &#8220;Rooftop  Highway.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>But they don&#8217;t believe there is state or federal funding  available to connect Watertown to Rouses Point by a 170-mile roadway  that is estimated to cost $3 billion to $4 billion.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The response in Tupper Lake was even more frosty, with town officials arguing that the highway could divert traffic and economic activity away from their community.\u00a0 This from the Adirondack Daily Enterprise.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;I do not support that because of businesses,&#8221;[town supervisor Roger] Amell said. &#8220;Right now, Route 3 is our corridor from Watertown to Plattsburgh.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>He  said if more traffic is directed to the northern route, fewer people  will use Route 3.
