{"id":6205,"date":"2012-06-28T11:21:40","date_gmt":"2012-06-28T15:21:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/?p=6205"},"modified":"2012-06-28T11:21:40","modified_gmt":"2012-06-28T15:21:40","slug":"ny-21-what-obamacare-ruling-means-for-north-country-politics","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/2012\/06\/28\/ny-21-what-obamacare-ruling-means-for-north-country-politics\/","title":{"rendered":"NY-21:  What Obamacare ruling means for North Country politics"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The 5-to-4 decision on Obamacare will resonate powerfully this summer and fall as the NY-21 congressional race unfolds, with Matt Doheny (R-Watertown) and Bill Owens (D-Plattsburgh) forced to get much more specific about healthcare policy.<\/p>\n<p>Until today, this was\u00a0 in large measure an ideological debate over the question of the Healthcare Reform Act&#8217;s constitutional legitimacy.\u00a0 That&#8217;s now resolved.<\/p>\n<p>But everyone agrees that the reform effort was deeply flawed.\u00a0 So the question now going forward will be, in far more specific, nuts-and-bolts terms:\u00a0 What next?<\/p>\n<p>How would Bill Owens work to refine and improve HCA if given another term by voters?\u00a0 How would he improve the act&#8217;s affordability?\u00a0 Or is he essentially satisfied with the law as it stands?<\/p>\n<p>And for Matt Doheny, as well, questions will be much more specific.<\/p>\n<p>As recently as June 9th, he called Obamacare &#8220;a disaster.&#8221;\u00a0 If he still wants to repeal Obamacare, as I assume he does, what exactly would he put it in place?\u00a0 How would he pay for it?<\/p>\n<p>How would he treat popular measures of the act, including protections for 20-somethings who are allowed to remain under their parents&#8217; coverage, and people with preexisting conditions?<\/p>\n<p>If I&#8217;m right, reporters like myself and rank and file voters won&#8217;t be satisfied now with broad political bromides from either major party candidate.<\/p>\n<p>I also think this puts a slightly greater burden, politically, on Doheny.<\/p>\n<p>Given this ruling, and the fact that we now have a law that shapes roughly a fifth of the nation&#8217;s economy, the Republican will have to make the argument that we need to go back to the starting line, rather than fine-tuning the existing policy.<\/p>\n<p>That narrative may play well with the GOP&#8217;s conservative-tea party base, who see Obamacare as an assault on liberty.<\/p>\n<p>But for moderates and independents &#8212; the kinds of voters who will decide the NY-21 contest &#8212;\u00a0 it remains to be seen whether there is an appetite for that kind of wholesale do-over.<\/p>\n<p>What do you think?\u00a0 Will healthcare be a factor in your vote in November?\u00a0 What do you want to hear from your candidate, whether that be Doheny or Owens?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The 5-to-4 decision on Obamacare will resonate powerfully this summer and fall as the NY-21 [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":12,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":[],"categories":[1],"tags":[6854,6550,881,6862,6856,20,6835],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/6205"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/12"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=6205"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/6205\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=6205"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=6205"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=6205"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
