{"id":6330,"date":"2012-07-27T08:00:31","date_gmt":"2012-07-27T12:00:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/?p=6330"},"modified":"2012-07-27T09:07:41","modified_gmt":"2012-07-27T13:07:41","slug":"morning-read-comlinks-once-a-leading-social-service-non-profit-close-to-shutting-down","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/2012\/07\/27\/morning-read-comlinks-once-a-leading-social-service-non-profit-close-to-shutting-down\/","title":{"rendered":"Morning Read:  ComLinks, once a leading social service non-profit, close to shutting down"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Years ago, when I was relatively new in the North Country, I joined former ComLinks director Nancy Reich on a visit to North Creek, where she met with then-Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton to talk about a new affordable housing program.<\/p>\n<p>ComLinks, in those days, was one of those multi-service nonprofit social agencies that seems to have a hand in just about everything, from gleaning to home winterization to the construction of affordable housing and domestic abuse.<\/p>\n<p><div id=\"attachment_6337\" style=\"width: 306px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/files\/2012\/07\/comlinkswarehouse2.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6337\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/files\/2012\/07\/comlinkswarehouse2-296x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"comlinkswarehouse2\" width=\"296\" height=\"300\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-6337\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/files\/2012\/07\/comlinkswarehouse2-296x300.jpg 296w, https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/files\/2012\/07\/comlinkswarehouse2-148x150.jpg 148w, https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/files\/2012\/07\/comlinkswarehouse2-444x450.jpg 444w, https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/files\/2012\/07\/comlinkswarehouse2.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 296px) 100vw, 296px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-6337\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Last summer, Comlinks cut distribution of food from its Malone warehouse to communities west of Massena.<\/p><\/div>But Reich was fired in 2010, and later pleaded guilty to a single count of grand larceny; and ComLinks has been in a down-spiral ever since.<\/p>\n<p>Today, the <a href=\"http:\/\/pressrepublican.com\/0100_news\/x1289994233\/ComLinks-may-fold\">Plattsburgh Press-Republican is reporting<\/a> that the organization may shut down completely as early as the end of summer.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Board President Joe Selenski is using his own money to meet payroll and hopes \u2014 as some overdue payments continue to trickle in from Albany \u2014 that the doors can stay open until its revenue can get stronger&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re on an austerity budget.
