{"id":6389,"date":"2012-08-07T10:38:03","date_gmt":"2012-08-07T14:38:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/?p=6389"},"modified":"2012-08-08T14:58:39","modified_gmt":"2012-08-08T18:58:39","slug":"parks-local-governments-give-histori-adironack-land-deal-mixed-reviews","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/2012\/08\/07\/parks-local-governments-give-histori-adironack-land-deal-mixed-reviews\/","title":{"rendered":"Park&#8217;s local governments give historic Adironack land deal mixed reviews"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The last forty-eight hours have seen a series of strong statements, pro and con, for the 69,000 acre land deal signed Sunday by Governor Andrew Cuomo.\u00a0 One of the most interesting conversations is happening within local government.<\/p>\n<p>At least three prominent local officials have come out in support of the $47 million dollar deal, including Essex County chair Randy Douglas and Minerva town supervisor Sue Montgomery Corey, both Democrats.<\/p>\n<p>The official press release also included positive comments from <span style=\"font-size: small;\">North Hudson town supervisor Ronald Moore.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u201cThe Boreas Ponds tract could be a big draw for people to hike, fish, hunt, and camp. It is a truly magnificent area that will at some point be open to the public,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>But the Park&#8217;s two big local government groups &#8212; the Adirondack Park Local Government Review Board and the Adirondack Association of Towns and Villages have both issued strongly worded statements opposing the deal.<\/p>\n<p>The Review Board calls the deal &#8220;unprecedented in its overall fiscal irresponsibility,&#8221; while AATV president Brian Towers suggested that the land effort would put &#8220;a boot across our necks.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Towers described the deal as continuing &#8220;a long history of questionable land acquisition supported by extreme environmentalists and ignorance of the fragile Adirondack Park economy.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The differing views here continue a long debate within local government over the Finch Pruyn project.\u00a0 Many communities negotiated closely with the Nature Conservancy, and arranged side deals allowing them to purchase land for local projects.<\/p>\n<p>When the Finch Pruyn effort was unveiled in 2007, not a single town voted to exercise the veto-power that communities hold over projects funded through the Environmental Protection Fund.<\/p>\n<p>But later, after the AATV and the Review Board began campaigning to revise the deal, some communities passed resolutions calling for the land purchase to be scaled back or canceled.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The last forty-eight hours have seen a series of strong statements, pro and con, for [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":12,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":[],"categories":[1],"tags":[22,4817,20],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/6389"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/12"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=6389"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/6389\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":6390,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/6389\/revisions\/6390"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=6389"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=6389"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=6389"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
