{"id":640,"date":"2009-03-27T08:01:00","date_gmt":"2009-03-27T12:01:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/2009\/03\/27\/another-cheese-state-lawmaker-tries-to-choke-out-imports\/"},"modified":"2009-03-27T08:01:00","modified_gmt":"2009-03-27T12:01:00","slug":"another-cheese-state-lawmaker-tries-to-choke-out-imports","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/2009\/03\/27\/another-cheese-state-lawmaker-tries-to-choke-out-imports\/","title":{"rendered":"Another cheese state lawmaker tries to choke out imports"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Last month, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.northcountrypublicradio.org\/news\/archive.php?id=13159\">I reported on state Senator Darrel Aubertine&#8217;s efforts to block dairy imports<\/a> &#8211; which mostly come in a processed powder form called milk protein concentrates, or MPCs &#8211; by changing the rules for product labeling.<\/p>\n<p>Today, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.watertowndailytimes.com\/article\/20090327\/NEWS02\/303279959\">the Watertown Daily Times reports<\/a> Wisconsin U.S. Senator Russell Feingold wants to do the same thing.<\/p>\n<p>This used to be a no-brainer in the New York dairy community.  But MPCs aren&#8217;t just imports anymore.  Dairy processors here see MPCs as a growing market, and they oppose the legislation now.<\/p>\n<p>In other economic news for the struggling dairy industry, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/domesticNews\/idUSTRE52P5B620090326\">agriculture secretary Tom Vilsack announced yesterday<\/a> will move 200 million pounds of dry milk surpluses into domestic nutrition plans.
