{"id":6444,"date":"2012-08-20T08:59:22","date_gmt":"2012-08-20T12:59:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/?p=6444"},"modified":"2012-08-20T14:45:51","modified_gmt":"2012-08-20T18:45:51","slug":"two-american-cultures-one-american-election","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/2012\/08\/20\/two-american-cultures-one-american-election\/","title":{"rendered":"The 100 Day Sprint: Two American cultures, one American election"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/files\/2012\/08\/electioncloud_4502.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-6448 alignleft\" title=\"electioncloud_450\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/files\/2012\/08\/electioncloud_4502-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/files\/2012\/08\/electioncloud_4502-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/files\/2012\/08\/electioncloud_4502-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/files\/2012\/08\/electioncloud_4502.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a>Two different snippets from America&#8217;s heated cultural conversation caught my ear over the weekend.<\/p>\n<p>The first was<a href=\"http:\/\/www.denpubs.com\/news\/2012\/aug\/19\/resist-gay-scout-leaders\/\"> a letter to the editor of the Times of Ticonderoga<\/a> from a Boy Scout leader, Charles Smith, arguing passionately against the inclusion of gay men and boys in scouting culture.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I urge every scout leader and parent to resist to the fullest extent of your ability [the involvement of gay men and boys],&#8221; Smith wrote, &#8220;and let national headquarters in Texas know of your resistance.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The second was an editorial written by Denton Publications publisher Dan Alexander, arguing in favor of public prayer before meetings of the Essex County board of supervisors.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The concept that we are \u201cOne nation under God\u201d continues to be challenged by groups offended by the concept that so many hold dear,&#8221; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.denpubs.com\/news\/2012\/jul\/31\/one-nation-under-god\/\">Alexander argued<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>These views are laid out sincerely, confidently, and in both cases there is an underlying assumption that the normal framework of American life is under attack.<\/p>\n<p>What&#8217;s fascinating is that so many people see this with equal sincerity, and equal confidence, entirely differently.<\/p>\n<p>Their view of a normal, moral America is one in which gays and lesbians are treated with equality.<\/p>\n<p>In this other America, Christian faith has no place framing civic business in a society where growing numbers of citizens are non-Christian or non-religious.<\/p>\n<p>This reflection isn&#8217;t particularly new or fresh.\u00a0 But every once in a while it strikes me anew just how far apart on these issues good and decent and well-meaning people are.<\/p>\n<p>We lament our polarized politics, but the truth is that we are a polarized society.<\/p>\n<p>That well-meaning scout master doesn&#8217;t want gays at his events, or taking part in his programs.\u00a0 He sees people who want to change those rules as aggressors, and sees himself as part of a noble resistance.<\/p>\n<p>There are equally well-meaning people who see him as a bigot, who interpret his stance as hateful and would balk at the idea of Mr. Smith serving as a mentor for their children.<\/p>\n<p>As I&#8217;ve written before, I suspect that a lot of this tension and animosity stems from the fact that America is changing.\u00a0 We are, year by year, a nation that is less white, less rural, less Christian and more openly diverse in our sexuality.<\/p>\n<p>The role of women in society has also changed profoundly in a short time.\u00a0 This kind of thing provokes deep responses, visceral passions.<\/p>\n<p>I suppose on one level it&#8217;s remarkable that our debates about these things remain as civil as they do.\u00a0 We may not want to attend one-another&#8217;s dinner parties (or jamborees).<\/p>\n<p>But in November we will vote for members of Congress, and for president, and the vast overwhelming majority of us will accept the results philosophically.<\/p>\n<p>We grumble about America&#8217;s noisy, ugly politics, but the truth is that they do a pretty good job of harnessing and tempering our passions.<\/p>\n<p>And in the end, I suspect that they are no noisier or uglier than we citizens choose to make them.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Two different snippets from America&#8217;s heated cultural conversation caught my ear over the weekend.
