{"id":6582,"date":"2012-09-21T08:19:40","date_gmt":"2012-09-21T12:19:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/?p=6582"},"modified":"2012-09-21T08:20:33","modified_gmt":"2012-09-21T12:20:33","slug":"morning-read-doheny-owens-engage-on-medicare","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/2012\/09\/21\/morning-read-doheny-owens-engage-on-medicare\/","title":{"rendered":"Morning Read:  Doheny, Owens engage on Medicare"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/2012\/09\/21\/morning-read-doheny-owens-engage-on-medicare\/100-day-sprint-9\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-6583\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-6583\" title=\"100 day sprint\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/files\/2012\/09\/100-day-sprint7-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/files\/2012\/09\/100-day-sprint7-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/files\/2012\/09\/100-day-sprint7-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/files\/2012\/09\/100-day-sprint7.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>The last couple of days, we&#8217;ve seen a real engagement in the NY21 race on the issue of Medicare.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.northcountrypublicradio.org\/news\/story\/20505\/20120919\/story-updated-ny21-doheny-still-absent-from-lively-medicare-debate\">Our Julie Grant went in first, with a story focusing on the national Republican Party&#8217;s ad campaign on the issue<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Her piece lays out clearly some of the broad philosophical and policy differences that surround this complex debate.<\/p>\n<p>The story advanced when the <a href=\"http:\/\/doheny4congress.com\/news\/2012-09-20\/does-bill-owens-believe-seniors-dont-deserve-same-choice-he-does\">Doheny camp put out a statement laying out their their idea about reforming Medicare<\/a>, which prompted stories like this one from <a href=\"http:\/\/watertowndailytimes.com\/article\/20120921\/NEWS03\/709219897\">Brian Amaral in the Watertown Daily Times<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>The back and forth on the entitlement that is both popular and costly highlighted a basic philosophical difference between the candidates on the senior health insurance program: Mr. Doheny believes in increasing the role of private insurers, while Mr. Owens does not.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.adirondackdailyenterprise.com\/page\/content.detail\/id\/532984\/Doheny-offers-more-detailed-views-on-Medicare.html?nav=5008\">Chris Morris at the Adirondack Daily Enterprise<\/a> also weighed in, responding to Doheny&#8217;s position statement.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>In his commentary, Doheny said he wasn&#8217;t putting forth a plan.\u00a0 &#8220;Instead, these are some ideas I&#8217;d like to see incorporated in any bipartisan effort put before Congress,&#8221; he said.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Doheny said patient choice is important. He said recipients who like the current &#8220;fee-for-service system&#8221; should be able to keep using it, but he added that Medicare should also welcome competition. He said it&#8217;s been proven that market forces keep costs from escalating.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This is clearly an issue that the Owens camp wanted to have raised in this campaign &#8212; they&#8217;ve been sending out press releases regularly accusing Doheny of wanting to &#8220;privatize&#8221; Medicare.
