In case you missed the news, Montreal Mayor and long-time politician G\u00e9rald Tremblay\u00a0resigned suddenly on Nov 5th<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Although Tremblay departed protesting his innocence the resignation came in response to damaging\u00a0allegations that collusion and bribery were commonplace under his administration.<\/p>\n

Because there was less than a year remaining in Tremblay’s term, it fell to Montreal’s city council to select an\u00a0interim\u00a0mayor.<\/p>\n

According to CBC news<\/a>, Independent City Councillor Michael Applebaum, and Union Montr\u00e9al’s official candidate Richard Deschamps were the only two running for that slot by the Nov 15th deadline.\u00a0Applebaum\u00a0nudged out Deschamps, 31 votes to 29 in the Nov 16th vote.<\/p>\n

Speaking on CBC’s Daybreak this morning, Applebaum outlined plans to “to stop the collusion and the corruption<\/a>“.<\/p>\n

Applebaum was only sworn in on Monday but the\u00a0Globe and Mail editorial<\/a>\u00a0is hailing his selection, calling Applebaum an “experienced, independent, fluently bilingual councillor who has vowed to build bridges and repair the city\u2019s shattered reputation.”<\/p>\n
