Bill Owens (D-Plattsburgh):<\/p>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Calibri,sans-serif; font-size: small;\">\u201cThe North Country has lost a friend today with the passing of David O\u2019Brien Martin,\u201d said Owens.\u00a0 \u201cMr. Martin served his country and his community with honor and distinction.\u00a0 He will be missed, and my thoughts and prayers are with his family this holiday season.\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n<p>David Martin was a political fixture in the North Country before my time in the region.\u00a0 He passed away on Tuesday at the age of 68.\u00a0 The St. Lawrence County native grew up in the Canton area, before going off to college at Notre Dame and the Albany Law School.\u00a0 He also served four years as a Marine captain in the late\u00a0sixties.<\/p>\n<p>His long history in politics took him from the\u00a0St. Lawrence County legislature to the\u00a0state Assembly and then, in 1981 he was elected to congress.\u00a0 He served the region for the next twelve years, stepping down in 1993 and handing the reins to John McHugh.<\/p>\n<p>Though he spent recent years outside the North Country, he dipped back into local politics occasionally, most recently with an endorsement of fellow Republican Matt Doheny.<\/p>\n<p>For those of you with longer memories and deeper histories than myself, I&#8217;d be interested in any recollections\u00a0or high ponts that you recall from Martin&#8217;s time in office.\u00a0 As always, comments welcome.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This from Rep.
