{"id":694,"date":"2009-04-20T10:03:00","date_gmt":"2009-04-20T14:03:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/2009\/04\/20\/chavez-ortega-and-why-conservatism-means-never-having-to-say-youre-sorry\/"},"modified":"2009-04-20T10:03:00","modified_gmt":"2009-04-20T14:03:00","slug":"chavez-ortega-and-why-conservatism-means-never-having-to-say-youre-sorry","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/2009\/04\/20\/chavez-ortega-and-why-conservatism-means-never-having-to-say-youre-sorry\/","title":{"rendered":"Chavez, Ortega and why conservatism means never having to say you&#8217;re sorry"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Conservatives are up in arms these days over President Barack Obama&#8217;s apology in Europe for America&#8217;s &#8220;arrogance.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>They&#8217;re also furious over his handshake and conversation with Venezuela&#8217;s elected president, Hugo Chavez.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/2009\/04\/18\/obama-endures-ortega-diatribe\/\">Fox News has also reported<\/a> that Obama sat through a 50-minute diatribe against the U.S.  from Nicaraguan President       Daniel Ortega, a socialist.<\/p>\n<p>In a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/stories\/0409\/21445.html\">Fox interview<\/a>, Newt Gingrich argued that Obama was aiding the &#8220;enemies of America.&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cFrankly, this does look a lot like Jimmy Carter. Carter tried weakness, and the world got tougher and tougher, because the predators, the aggressors, the anti-Americans, the dictators \u2013 when they sense weakness, they all start pushing ahead,\u201d Gingrich said on Fox &amp; Friends.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Gingrich also jabbed at Obama for his &#8220;bow to the Saudi king.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The dust-up comes at the same time that Democrats were releasing memos detailing America&#8217;s extensive use of torture in the war on terror.  Here&#8217;s the N<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2009\/04\/19\/opinion\/19sun1.html?ref=opinion\">Y Times editorial<\/a> take:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>To read the four newly released memos on prisoner interrogation written by George W. Bush\u2019s Justice Department is to take a journey into depravity.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>So what do you think?  Is Obama showing weakness around the world?  Rejecting American exceptionalism?  Revealing American war tactics?<\/p>\n<p>Or crafting a more nuanced foreign policy?  Returning morality to our defense policy?
