Union contracts too expensive in the U.S.?  Try Sri Lanka!  Pesky Clean Air Act requirements too costly?  They don&#8217;t have those in Jakarta!  That sort of thing.  You can find <a href=\"http:\/\/www.freetrade.org\/pubs\/freetotrade\/chap3.html\">plenty of critics<\/a> of this assessment, too.<\/p>\n<p>President Obama made readdressing environmental and labor issues in NAFTA a major issue <a href=\"http:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/the_press_office\/Press-Availability-by-President-Obama-and-Prime-Minister-Harper-of-Canada-2\/19\/09\/\">when he met with Prime Minister Stephen Harper<\/a> in Ottawa in February.<\/p>\n<p>But now it appears, after meeting with Mexican President Felipe Calderon, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2009\/04\/21\/business\/21nafta.html?hp\">that&#8217;s off.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>NAFTA has, and will continue to have, a big effect on the North Country economy.
