{"id":713,"date":"2009-04-27T14:52:00","date_gmt":"2009-04-27T18:52:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/2009\/04\/27\/time-for-a-reset-on-new-yorks-small-towns\/"},"modified":"2009-04-27T14:52:00","modified_gmt":"2009-04-27T18:52:00","slug":"time-for-a-reset-on-new-yorks-small-towns","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/2009\/04\/27\/time-for-a-reset-on-new-yorks-small-towns\/","title":{"rendered":"Time for a &quot;reset&quot; on New York&#8217;s small towns"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Tom Brokaw wrote an editorial <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2009\/04\/20\/opinion\/20brokaw.html?ref=opinion\">earlier this month for the New York Times <\/a>arguing that rural governments and institutions (he talks about the huge archipelago of universities in North and South Dakota) need to downsize.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Every state and every region in the country is stuck with some form of anachronistic and expensive local government structure that dates to horse-drawn wagons, family farms and small-town convenience.<\/p>\n<p>If this is a reset, it\u2019s time to reorganize our state and local government structures for today\u2019s realities rather than cling to the sensibilities of the 20th century. <\/p>\n<p>If we demand this from General Motors, we should ask no less of ourselves.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Governor Paterson is talking today about property taxes.  Listen for Karen DeWitt&#8217;s report tomorrow morning during the 8 O&#8217;clock Hour.<\/p>\n<p>But isn&#8217;t the problem really one that we own locally?
