{"id":7335,"date":"2013-02-12T05:32:55","date_gmt":"2013-02-12T10:32:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/?p=7335"},"modified":"2013-02-12T05:32:56","modified_gmt":"2013-02-12T10:32:56","slug":"north-country-democrats-grey-hair-drug-ring","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/2013\/02\/12\/north-country-democrats-grey-hair-drug-ring\/","title":{"rendered":"North Country Democrat&#8217;s grey-hair drug ring?"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_7336\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/2013\/02\/12\/north-country-democrats-grey-hair-drug-ring\/rudy-johnson\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-7336\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7336\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-7336\" title=\"rudy johnson\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/files\/2013\/02\/rudy-johnson-300x243.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"243\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/files\/2013\/02\/rudy-johnson-300x243.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/files\/2013\/02\/rudy-johnson-150x121.jpg 150w, https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/files\/2013\/02\/rudy-johnson-450x364.jpg 450w, https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/files\/2013\/02\/rudy-johnson.jpg 460w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-7336\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Rudy Johnson in a 2010 campaign photo<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Sometimes politics and life converge in ways that are just too weird.<\/p>\n<p>Last week, the Adirondack Daily Enterprise reported that former North Country Assembly candidate Rudy Johnson &#8212; a Democrat from Malone &#8212; had been busted on drug charges.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.adirondackdailyenterprise.com\/page\/content.detail\/id\/535360\/Former-Assembly-candidate-arrested-on-drug-charges--4rd-update-.html?nav=5008\">According to the Enterprise<\/a>, Johnson &#8220;was allegedly found with 100 bags of crack cocaine in the hood of his clothing when police raided a Harlem apartment&#8221; late last month.<\/p>\n<p>Johnson, you will remember, ran a respectable and feisty campaign for the 114th Assembly district seat in 2010, coming off well in a debate in Saranac Lake.<\/p>\n<p>(Though my breathless reporting that Johnson <a href=\"http:\/\/www.northcountrypublicradio.org\/news\/story\/16503\/20101015\/upset-brewing-in-assembly-race\">had &#8220;a very real shot at capturing&#8221; a win<\/a> that year was, in technical, journalistic terms, flat dead wrong.)<\/p>\n<p>Now it has to be said first that the charges against Johnson are just that &#8212; charges.\u00a0 He is innocent until proven guilty.\u00a0 The Enterprise&#8217;s efforts to contact him to hear his side of the story have gone unanswered.<\/p>\n<p>In fairness to the North Country&#8217;s Democratic Party, there&#8217;s also no evidence that Johnson continued to be active in regional politics since his defeat in 2010.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, there are some big unanswered questions here.\u00a0 Johnson is 64 years old.\u00a0 And according to the Enterprise&#8217;s reporting, the two people arrested with him were ages 68 and 58.\u00a0 Hardly your typical drug ring.<\/p>\n<p>If some part of the allegations here prove accurate, however, the case is deeply sad.\u00a0 Johnson seemed like an engaging, personable guy.\u00a0 As the Enterprise reports, he &#8220;campaigned vigorously in Saranac Lake, knocking on doors and attending local events&#8230;&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;ll update this story as more information becomes available.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sometimes politics and life converge in ways that are just too weird.
