But sometimes they soldiered on through snow and ice. This was the case\u00a0200 years ago, when a significant battle in our region took place on February 22, 1813.<\/p>\n<p>All sorts of <a href=\"http:\/\/celebrate1812.ca\/events\/battle-of-ogdensburg-1\">events and re-enactments<\/a>\u00a0are taking place this weekend to commemorate the Battle of Ogdensburg\u00a0&#8211;\u00a0also known as\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/prescottraidsogdensburg.com\/Home_Page.html\">Prescott&#8217;s raid on Ogdensburg<\/a>\u00a0in Canada.<\/p>\n<p>On the U.S. side of the river, be sure to check out\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.fort1749.org\/\">Fort de la Pr\u00e9sentation<\/a>, at Lighthouse Point, Ogdensburg.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.forsythsrifles.org\/\">Forsyth&#8217;s Rifles<\/a>\u00a0will have a starring role in reproducing the battle, even though history demands they must lose and withdraw.\u00a0<span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">Canadian participants include the <\/span><a style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\" href=\"http:\/\/grenvillemilitia.ca\/event\/raid-on-ogdensburg-200th-anniversary-event\/\">Grenville Militia<\/a><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">, the\u00a0<\/span><a style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\" href=\"http:\/\/glengarrylightinfantry.ca\/battle_ogdensburg.php\">Glengary Light Infantry Fencibles<\/a><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">\u00a0along with related <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pc.gc.ca\/lhn-nhs\/on\/wellington\/activ\/activ.aspx\">demonstrations at Fort Wellington<\/a>\u00a0&#8211; just across the river in Prescott, Ontario.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">Todd Moe presented more of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.northcountrypublicradio.org\/news\/story\/21474\/20130220\/the-story-of-an-ogdensburg-pioneer-and-the-war-of-1812\">the back story<\/a> in conversations with participants like <a href=\"http:\/\/www.northcountrypublicradio.org\/news\/story\/21484\/20130221\/when-ogdensburg-was-a-battleground-200-years-ago\">Michael Whittaker<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">\u00a0during the 8 o&#8217; clock hour this past week.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">A look at various <a href=\"http:\/\/news.nationalpost.com\/2012\/12\/08\/mythbusting-tales-of-canadas-victory-in-the-1813-battle-of-ogdensburg\/\">myths from that battle<\/a>\u00a0was presented in this National Post article. Ron Dale, Parks Canada\u2019s War of 1812 bicentennial manager, asserts that much of the looting in Ogdensburg was done by (gasp!) the ladies of Prescott!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201c&#8230;Since the border had never stopped Canadians from socializing with Americans, Mrs. Jones of Prescott knew where Mrs. Smith of Ogdensburg stored her best china.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Speaking of re-enactments, while it&#8217;s probably wise to keep your day job, here&#8217;s a recent \u00a0&#8216;help wanted&#8217; post you just don&#8217;t see every day:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The Towns of Midland and Penetanguishene are looking to host an early 19th Century\/War of 1812 encampment in conjunction with this two day TALL SHIPS\u00ae 1812 Tour event and are looking specifically looking for the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>British &amp; American Military Units, Individuals &amp; Encampments<\/li>\n<li>Long Boat Crews and Boats with Cannons\/Naval Encampments<\/li>\n<li>Fife and Drum Groups<\/li>\n<li>Period Demonstrators, Artisans, Entertainers and Merchants<\/li>\n<li>Native, Voyageur, Buckskinner Units, Individuals &amp; Encampments<\/li>\n<li>Artillery Crews and Cannons\/Artillery Encampments<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you have a special unique 19th century talent not listed above we would also like to hear from you!<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Like it or not, here in Canada there&#8217;s a healthy chunk of funding and\u00a0government\u00a0support to commemorate the War of 1812. Most re-enactors and history buffs do their shtick for love. So it&#8217;s sort of a minor miracle when compensation is offered.<\/p>\n<p>The ad is for an event coming up in \u00a0late August.\u00a0Full\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.choocopo.ca\/Communique\/newsletter-190213.html#3\">details and contact info<\/a>\u00a0are listed on the Feb 19th newsletter from the Council of Heritage Organizations of Ottawa (CHOO).<\/p>\n<p>According to web info on &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sailtraining.org\/tallships\/2013greatlakes\/index.php\">Tall Ships Challenge Great Lakes 2013<\/a>&#8221; that program:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8230;will celebrate the 200th anniversary of the major military events of the War of 1812 that took place in the Great Lakes. The series is also dedicated to promoting awareness of the Lakes\u2019 ecosystems and fresh water conservation. The series will sail to all five Great Lakes and the St. Lawrence Seaway. There will be point-to-point races, more than ten ports, wonderful hospitality, and millions of visitors.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>But, where, pray tell, are the towns of Midland and Penetanguishene? In South Georgian Bay, of course. Georgian Bay is a lovely area, it starts roughly 100 miles due north of Toronto. My family enjoyed a camping\/hiking trip there in 2002. I would go back in a heartbeat. (Too bad I am not a\u00a0period\u00a0blacksmith. Or washer woman.)<\/p>\n<p>As for reenactment by the season, gee, I don&#8217;t know&#8230;winter frostbite? Or summer heat stroke and mosquitoes! It sounds pretty challenging. But it has a certain appeal to some, as you can see in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=-difflMkVVE\">this video<\/a>. Back in December,&#8221;Man of War&#8221; author<a href=\"http:\/\/www.northcountrypublicradio.org\/news\/story\/21143\/20121226\/books-man-of-war\"> Charlie Schroeder told NCPR&#8217;s Betsy Kepes<\/a>,\u00a0one of his favorite re-enacting experiences was rowing a bateau (cargo boat) down the St. Lawrence as part of &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.thebigrow.com\/\">The Big Row<\/a>&#8220;.<\/p>\n<p>Happy anniversary to those making history come alive in Ogdensburg and Prescott this weekend!<\/p>\n<p>If there&#8217;s any particular aspect to these events you&#8217;d like to highlight, please share more in the comment section.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Given a choice, armies of yesteryear preferred\u00a0to skip winter campaigns.
