{"id":772,"date":"2009-05-21T08:02:00","date_gmt":"2009-05-21T12:02:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/2009\/05\/21\/a-good-week-for-conservatives\/"},"modified":"2009-05-21T08:02:00","modified_gmt":"2009-05-21T12:02:00","slug":"a-good-week-for-conservatives","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/2009\/05\/21\/a-good-week-for-conservatives\/","title":{"rendered":"A good week for conservatives"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Conservatives &#8212; including center-right members of the Democratic Party &#8212; won some significant victories this week.<\/p>\n<p>They pushed through gun rules that allow people to carry loaded firearms in national parks; they scuttled President Obama&#8217;s quick-closure plan for Gitmo.<\/p>\n<p>They threw Nancy Pelosi on the defensive about the CIA. <\/p>\n<p>Obama himself sided with conservatives on several issues, including the decision not to release new torture photos and maintaining military tribunals. <\/p>\n<p>There were also growing signs that the White House has little interest in challenging the Don&#8217;t-Ask-Don&#8217;t-Tell policy that bans openly homosexual Americans from serving in the military.<\/p>\n<p>Two interesting points here:<\/p>\n<p>First, a lot of these debates are now happening within the Democratic Party. <\/p>\n<p>The Dems have elected so many members from conservative states and &#8220;red&#8221; congressional districts that fault lines on culture issues and national defense are more visible within their ranks.<\/p>\n<p>Second, we&#8217;re getting a first chance to see the President in a news cycle where he&#8217;s not controlling the message.<\/p>\n<p>He&#8217;ll <a href=\"http:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/stories\/0509\/22804.html\">speak about foreign policy<\/a> and the terror fight this evening, followed by former Vice President Dick Cheney.<\/p>\n<p>This match-up represents a key moment for conservatives. <\/p>\n<p>To keep the week&#8217;s momentum going, they desperately need Cheney to look like a reasoned and mature alternative to a popular, progressive but still untested President.<\/p>\n<p>For all his many blunders over the last decade, and his abysmal popularity numbers, Cheney plays this role well. <\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;ll see if Americans have an appetite for more of his brand of foreign policy &#8212; or if Obama can offer a new doctrine for his first term.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Conservatives &#8212; including center-right members of the Democratic Party &#8212; won some significant victories this [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":12,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":[],"categories":[1],"tags":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/772"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/12"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=772"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/772\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=772"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=772"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=772"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
