{"id":7736,"date":"2013-04-23T06:22:05","date_gmt":"2013-04-23T10:22:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/?p=7736"},"modified":"2013-04-23T08:30:31","modified_gmt":"2013-04-23T12:30:31","slug":"are-you-worried-about-terrorists-operating-in-canada","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/2013\/04\/23\/are-you-worried-about-terrorists-operating-in-canada\/","title":{"rendered":"Are you worried about terrorists operating in Canada?"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_7737\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/files\/2013\/04\/csis-hq.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7737\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-7737 \" title=\"csis hq\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/files\/2013\/04\/csis-hq-300x171.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"171\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/files\/2013\/04\/csis-hq-300x171.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/files\/2013\/04\/csis-hq-150x85.jpg 150w, https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/files\/2013\/04\/csis-hq.jpg 390w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-7737\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Canadian Security Intelligence Service headquarters in Ottawa (Source: CSIS)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Yesterday&#8217;s announcement that the Royal Canadian Mounted Police had foiled a terror plot based in Montreal and Toronto follows a long, controversial narrative in Canada that stretches back to the 1990s.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s when Algerian terror cells allegedly used Canada&#8217;s loose immigration policies to stage and plan attacks aimed at France and the US in Quebec.<\/p>\n<p>The so-called Millenium bomber, Ahmed Ressam, first drew international headlines in 1999, when the Algerian national tried to bring a car bomb into the US to attack LA&#8217;s international airport.<\/p>\n<p>In 2005, Canadian intelligence <a href=\"http:\/\/www.canada.com\/national\/nationalpost\/news\/story.html?id=aa8696a1-5a53-40ca-868a-3c8f6009581c\">&#8220;dismantled&#8221; an Al Qaeda cell operating in the Toronto area, including four Algerians<\/a>.\u00a0 But tensions rose again in 2006 when 18 Toronto men were arrested for operating terror training camps in Ontario.<\/p>\n<p>Then came troubling news that men from London, Ontario were involved in the Islamic terror attack on an Algerian refinery in January of this year.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ctvnews.ca\/canada\/fourth-canadian-sought-in-aftermath-of-algeria-terror-attack-1.1235689\">Canadian Security Intelligence Service now says as many as four people from Canada may have been involved or have ties to that deadly attack<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Which brings us to yesterday&#8217;s announcement that two foreign nationals were operating in Montreal and Toronto, allegedly working with Al Qaeda elements in Iran to attack a New York City-bound passenger train, according to the RCMP.<\/p>\n<p>In February of this year, the head of CSIS, Richard Fadden, spoke at a committee hearing in Ottawa and suggested that Al Qaeda continues to make inroads in Canada.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They are beginning to communicate between themselves far more than they used to.
