The agencies that runs it, and the communities that host it &#8211; are planning myriad festivities on both sides of the border.  Check out <a href=\"http:\/\/www.greatlakes-seaway.com\/en\/seaway50\/events.html\">this site<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.southstormont.ca\/beacon_50.html\">this one<\/a> for details.<\/p>\n<p>The Seaway is in the eye of the beholder.  It&#8217;s brought us Alcoa, Reynolds, and General Motors (jobs), the zebra mussel (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.northcountrypublicradio.org\/news\/archive.php?id=11399\">invasive species<\/a>), <a href=\"http:\/\/www.northcountrypublicradio.org\/news\/turtle.html\">PCBs<\/a> (from aforementioned factories), <a href=\"http:\/\/www.northcountrypublicradio.org\/news\/archive.php?id=7165\">Lost Villages<\/a> (flooded behind the dam), the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.northcountrypublicradio.org\/news\/archive.php?id=239\">Moses-Saunders power dam<\/a> (cheap electricity), oil spills (the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.northcountrypublicradio.org\/news\/slick76\/slick76.php\">Slick of &#8217;76<\/a>), and the always fascinating sight of huge freighters slipping through the American narrows.  I&#8217;m sure there&#8217;s lots more.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m interested in talking with people who have first-hand accounts of the birth of this engineering marvel that forever changed the North Country.
