State Senator Betty Little’s office says a measure banning the importation and ownership of Eurasian pigs – the kind that turn into feral hogs when they escape or are released — has cleared the legislature and awaits Governor Andrew Cuomo’s signatures.<\/p>\n

The animals are one of the most attention-grabbing ‘invasive’ species to arrive in the North Country in recent years, with state officials struggling to contain a colony living in the apple orchards and farms around Peru, in Clinton County.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, the state Assembly today passed two amendments to the state Constitution that would allow land swaps on the Adirondack forest preserve.<\/p>\n

One settles land disputes around Racquette Lake in the interior of the Park, known as the Township 40 issue.<\/p>\n

The other allows NYCO minerals to mine roughly 200 acres of state forest preserve land.\u00a0 In exchange, the company will acquire roughly 1,500 acres of forest which will be added to the ‘forever wild’ preserve.<\/p>\n

Both land swap measures still need approval by voters and will appear on the state ballot next November.<\/p>\n
