John Boehner, leader of the House Republicans, reportedly called the Wall Street bailout a “crap sandwich.” <\/p>\n
But it also appears that he plans to vote for the $700 billion deal.<\/p>\n
With a vote pending, it seems certain that North Country congressmembers Kirsten Gillibrand (D) and John McHugh (R) will both vote in favor of the unpopular deal.<\/p>\n
The next question is whether it will haunt them on the campaign trail.<\/p>\n
McHugh faces a truly long-shot challenge, so the bailout isn’t likely to affect his chances in November.<\/p>\n
Gillibrand on the other hand faces a high-profile challenge from Republican Sandy Treadwell. <\/p>\n
Can Treadwell capitalize on public dissatisfaction with Wall Street welfare? <\/p>\n
It won’t be easy. So far, the two appear to agree — in broad terms — that the bailout was necessary.<\/p>\n
