{"id":972,"date":"2009-08-12T08:06:00","date_gmt":"2009-08-12T12:06:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/2009\/08\/12\/will-democrats-rally-to-owens\/"},"modified":"2009-08-12T08:06:00","modified_gmt":"2009-08-12T12:06:00","slug":"will-democrats-rally-to-owens","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/2009\/08\/12\/will-democrats-rally-to-owens\/","title":{"rendered":"Will Democrats rally to Owens?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The pick of Bill Owens to run in the McHugh-seat special election was a sign that Democrats are playing this one to win.<\/p>\n<p>But some of the blog traffic here has suggested disenchantment with a relatively conservative guy who has no track record as a Democratic Party activist.<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, a cursory web search (and trust me, someone&#8217;s doing detailed oppo research even as I type) turns up some donations Owens made to a Republican candidate back in the late 1990s.<\/p>\n<p>Owens <a href=\"http:\/\/www.city-data.com\/elec2\/elec-PLATTSBURGH-NY.html\">donated approximately $750<\/a>  to GOP Senator Alphonse D&#8217;Amato over a couple of election cycles.<\/p>\n<p>Owens has some political cover here.  It happens that former Sen. D&#8217;Amato is also a close family friend of Democratic Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand.<\/p>\n<p>But getting the Dem base on board will be an important step for a political newcomer in this race.
