Early days at the farmer’s markets
It was cool and cloudy and sparse — but very cheery — at the Canton Farmer’s Market yesterday. I bought local pork sausage (frozen) and a lovely pie, and contemplated the flats of tomatoes and the pots of perennials. Mostly, I caught up with how the winter was for the people who will help us eat well, and locally, for the next several months. Here’s Brian Bennett, of Bittersweet Farm in Heuvelton, now supplying sausage and other meat items as well as plants and produce. In the background is Dawn Grundhofer, maker of great pies, bread and cookies. Markets across the North Country are in their first days. Check them out! Canton’s is open Tuesdays and Fridays. NCPR is partnering with TAUNY this growing (and harvest) season to “plot” North Country gardens, big and small. We’re hoping home gardeners and commercial growers will help us map and document who grows what and how (and where) this year.
