Tear down your walls, public media stations!

Okay, I was just trying to get your attention with that headline. (Bill Haenel, our web developer genius, says snappy headlines encourage people to actually read blog entries.)

But, there is a kernel of truth in those words. AIRblast, the publication of the Association of Independents in Radio, just published my manifesto about bringing the next generation of public media (radio, tv, digital) professionals into stations across the country.

PS: The handsome wooly fellow in the picture is Bo. I think of him as Bo Diddley; my husband thinks his name is Beau, as in Beauregard. Either way, he’s as lovable as a Rambouillet ram can be. He is not interested in a public media career.

Ellen, as always, I wish you the best.
I read your manifesto and gave it an A -, only because I’m old school and nothing is ever perfect but imperfection.
I, like you, am a big city person. Born in Detroit, then had the opportunity to live in the East Village during the 60’s. I still love the city but found my way up here, first Schoharie, then the Adirondacks.
I would listen to NCPR even if I could get other radio stations. Though NCPR sometimes does bother me with some of its programing, for the most part I don’t have a problem.
My first love was radio and once upon a time I almost went in that direction. As a kid, I used to enjoy trying to pull in NYC on the crystal radio I built and as a teenager I was a DJ at weekly dances held at my high school. My heroes were a local DJ by the name of Tom Clay who I managed to get to DJ at one of the dances and, of course, Murry the K at WINS 1010. I could pull in that station at night and then when stationed at Newport when in the Navy.
What I love about radio is how it lets you use your imagination, as you can with books but not with TV or movies.
Struggle on. Your efforts are appreciated.

    Ellen,
You were a real trooper on Saturday morning with the way you struggled with your voice which didn’t want to work.
    Hope you feel better soon.

Thanks, Pete, for both of your posts. Thankfully, Jackie Sauter heard my on air croaking and rushed in to relieve me. Truly the radio announcer’s nightmare: no voice!
