Keene Valley update

Jim and Charity Marlatt, still smiling.

At NCPR, we have a lot of listeners and web visitors…and many of you are truly our friends: you cheer us on, you volunteer your time and ideas, you host parties for us, and much more. Friends help friends. Friends care about friends. Obviously. Charity and Jim Marlatt have been such good friends to NCPR. When the stability of their home was seriously compromised by the recent (and on-going) landslide on Porter Mountain in Keene Valley, I knew I couldn’t fix their house, but I could stop by and have a cup of tea with them.

Jim walked me around the property. I took a couple of pictures to show you what they’re up against.

The cliff, falling away from the home's foundation.

Jim points out the new location for their home.

While I was visiting, workers were in the process of dis-assembling parts of the house, stabilizing it, and preparing it for the move to a new location on the Marlatts’ property.

I think the message that came through most clearly from Jim and Charity was, in fact, gratitude: gratitude for having each other and gratitude for having neighbors and friends who have been there for them.
