Another turtle moment

Our digital design guy, Bill Haenel, sent this picture and message to a few of us earlier today:

“No, the man in these photos is not weed-whacking the street under police supervision. He is, in fact, pushing a large snapping turtle out of the road, on Park Street (heading South, just past the railroad tracks) – yes, with cooperation from the village police, who turned on their lights and stopped traffic and everything. Where did he come from? No water in this part of Canton for him to live in or near.” (Might be a female looking for sand to lay eggs in.)

We’re collecting turtle stories and information this summer. Two earlier entries to this blog may be of interest to you. One from Shelly, the other from Martha.

Here’s a link to a page all about snapping turtles…with photos.

And here’s a short video about the common snapping turtle. (Warning: I couldn’t erase the “comments” which start with a rather nasty reference.)

This one of the things I love about people up here. They will break for animals and will help them cross the road if help is needed.
In the case of snapping turtles, you do need to be careful because they will snap at you.
