The great divide

I’ve figured out the true difference between Adirondackers and flatlanders.

No see ums.

Mountain people can talk about surviving high elevation blizzards and having frost-free growing seasons of only 23 days, but your real point of pride should be sharing habitat with no see ums. Adirondack Community Trust Executive Director Cali Brooks told me about keeping windows closed on summer evenings so she could leave reading lights on…opening them only after lights out. These are screened windows! And, at a party in Blue Mountain Lake last week, someone showed me the inside of their forearm where no see ums had been at work. Bloody mess!

You win. You’re tougher than us valley folk. I concede.

Actually – I know I’m different – but bugs of any size or shape have never been more than an aggravation. I seldom git bit and only wish they would stop getting in my eyes.
I think it’s an individual thing because my wife does suffer from bites.
If there is such a thing as no see ums, I haven’t seen them.
