Listening Post: NCPR is cheaper than dirt

I’m always looking for the value proposition, that is, I’m kind of a tightwad. I want bang for the buck, return on investment, a big upside, a deep discount. And yet every year, I reach into my wallet to support North Country Public Radio, just as I did for many years before I came to work here. So what’s up with that? I could get it for free.

Except that I couldn’t. No donations, no NCPR, pretty simple. But NCPR can be had for cheap. The average gift to NCPR is $80 a year. My calculator tells me that this comes out to $6.67 a month. Not a bad value proposition–cheap, in fact.

Even cheaper than dirt. To test this, I went to a gardening supply website to get a price on dirt. A 1.5 cubic foot bag of Organic Choice Garden Soil retails at–drumroll please–$6.97. So there you have it. On average, NCPR is $.30 cheaper than dirt.

As of this writing, we are about $130,000 from our goal. At $80 a head, that means we need to hear from 1,625 more people before Saturday at 8 pm. That’s a lot of calls and clicks. But if you make a gift to NCPR right now, you can let us worry about delivering the rest of the crowd.

$.30 cheaper than dirt — still laughing! Thanks for choosing organic dirt …

NCPR has been in my life since Fall 1976 — can’t imagine being without it. C’mon, everyone, cough it up — best deal in town!
