In honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, this question for each of you: if you had the power to make a single change in your life, your community, the nation or the world, what would it be?
It goes beyond human power–perhaps playing god–but for me it’s this: instilling in everyone (including myself) an active sense of compassion…for other people, for the natural world.
Check out the North Country Public Radio tumblr page for a less well-known but very powerful quote from MLK (thanks to Dale Hobson). Just scroll past Todd’s Norwegian thermometer.

I wouldn’t want to change anyone or anything. Let people be people and make whatever changes they want or not.
If you don’t want to change, you probably wont and it is highly presumptuous to expect others to change to meet your guidelines and standards.
I understand the spirit behind radical acceptance of exactly how things are, but I worry that this can become an excuse to avoid the hard work of striving for a more just and sustainable world.
Those who are victims of injustice do not have the luxury of avoiding this hard work, but unfortunately they also are very likely not to have the means to bring about real change.
I agree with Ellen. I wish people would be less selfish, more compassionate, and more willing to use their gifts for the common good.
I greatly admire Martin Luther King, Jr., and think that his nonviolently trying to make people and society less racist was good for our country and good for all of the individuals who were inspired by his message.
Our world would be much worse off if he had not had the “presumption” to try to change people and change the world.
