How many people can you fit on the head of a pin?

In spite of the photo and the start of the major league season, this entry is not about baseball. And, in spite of this week’s fundraiser, it’s not about fundraising. Well, not exactly. It’s about population density.

The latest blog post from Robert Krulwich is inspired by this statement by physicist Brian Green:

Remove all the space within the atoms making up the human body, and every person that’s ever lived would fit inside a baseball.

Krulwich then goes on to share some amazing photos and data maps that explore global population density. Like this one:

Really, though, you’ve got to click on the link, here it is again, to see the entire article from Krulwich. As usual, he slams it out of the park.

Oh yes, back to fundraising…because of where we live, we simply don’t have millions of people packed into high-rise apartment buildings, each apartment with its own radios or iPads linked to www.ncpr.org, to count on to help this station pay its bills.

Out here in the boonies, off the world’s beaten track, every individual makes a big difference. (Think about how deeply you felt the loss when a friend moved away or a neighbor down the road died.) We need each other. We rely on each other.

How about it? Make a contribution to your public media organization at www.ncpr.org — because we’re all on the same team and we can’t afford to have you on the bench.

Thank you.
