Breaking News Update Monday 9 am:

We are done! Three hours into our on-air fundraiser, we have passed our goal. Thank you everyone who made this historic achievement possible.

This drawing will remain open until noon, so we can include people who have gotten in touch via mail since Friday. I gotta say it. Wow.

Across the country, public radio stations are watching NCPR–and you.  Because we’re trying to reach our fall fundraiser goal of $325,000 without interrupting programs.

This would be an historic change, and your response has been heroic so far, taking us almost all the way to that goal.

Heroic work deserves a heroic reward, so it time to unveil the big kahuna, the Grand Prize that will go to one of you. On Monday, whether we have met our goal or not by that time, the grand prize will go to one of those that did not hesitate when the call went out.

And the prize is:

Airfare Anywhere, $2500 worth. Use it for as many trips as you want, as many seats as you want. Go anywhere, on us.

If you already donated, Thank You! If you haven’t—please don’t wait:

Make your gift to NCPR now!

And don’t miss your chance to win our grand prize drawing for $2500 of airfare anywhere. It happens Monday, and anyone who gets in touch with NCPR is entered to win.

    Even Liberia?

  2. Lois says:

How do a make a donation that will also put me in the running for the contest?

  3. ncpradmin says:

    Hi Lois–

Any donation automatically puts you in the running for the contest. You don’t have to do anything special.

I hate to be curmudgeonly, but, in the age of catastrophic climate change, does it make sense for public radio to encourage air travel? Traveling by jet is one of the worst things anyone can do. $2500 worth of air travel would put a person’s carbon footprint off the charts and offset all the savings I strive so hard for, for the next ten years. We really have to stop pretending these things don’t matter. I appreciate the great service NCPR provides. I would encourage more thought and conversation about moral/ethical issues such as this.

  5. Kendra says:

    Larry, you are so right.

    You ARE curmudgeonly!

  6. Larry says:

Some call it curmudgeonly, others call it maturity (when one has the realization that life on earth is not necessarily meant to be a party).

  7. Judith Glasser says:

Not to put too fine a point on it, one can hardly get anywhere for $2500 nowadays. Maybe two or three people could fly from Watertown to Chicago for that, but not much further. A friend just visited us and the trip cost him almost $1000 for just that round trip. So, Larry, not much flying is likely to be involved.

  8. Claudia says:

Is this one of the gifts we get to choose with a specific $ amount donation? (te he)

  9. Jeez M. Crow says:

    Dale,
This is your conscience speaking (again). This post not only omits the required language that no donation is necessary to enter the drawing, but it actively deceives readers into believing that this contest is available exclusively to donors. Your conscience expects a little more honesty from NCPR.

  10. ncpradmin says:

    Thanks Jeez–

Too many similar messages in the last few days. I got sloppy with this one. While the FCC regulations only apply to broadcast language, NCPR has always believed we should operate under the same restrictions online as we do on air. My bad. As you say, it is not necessary to give to enter the drawing and the language above now reflects that.

  11. knuckleheadedliberal says:

JMC, it says “Anyone who gets in touch is entered to win.”

That would be “anyone”, not just donors…though technically it may not apply to minors, I don’t know. And “gets in touch” which could be by Internet, phone, mail, telex, telegraph, even pigeon I suppose, or in person.

And hey! This whole internet thing seems like it just might work out for you guys there at NCPR.

  12. ncpradmin says:

    Hi Knuck–

The “Anyone who gets in touch is entered to win.” was added by me in response to Jeez’s comment. It wasn’t there before he gave me a poke.

And you bet this new fundraiser approach is working. We’re all kind of flabbergasted here with the response from everyone. NCPR listeners are making heads explode across the public radio system.

  13. Jeez M. Crow says:

Oh right. I see it now. the very last clause in the last sentence under the very large subhead, “Make your gift to NCPR now!”

    Your conscience is technically satisfied.

  14. ncpradmin says:

    Jeez–

And anyone who clicks on that big link goes to a form where the first item at the top is two checkboxes. The first says “Donation” and the second says “Enter me in the drawing only.” Technically, that seems pretty clear.

  15. Jeez M. Crow says:

Oh. You mean the banner button that says, “This is the part you click when you want to give us money.

    I think I get it.

  16. ncpradmin says:

    Jeez–

No. The main web banner on the home page says nothing about the drawing because it has been in place for weeks whether we were promoting a drawing or not. I mean the link in the blog post about the prize drawing. As I think you know.

    Dale

  17. Jeez M. Crow says:

My mistake. I was focusing on the banner button and link attached to this particular post, both of which mention making a donation. Just to be more of a pain, is there any way to donate and not be entered in the drawing? (I am a purist and prefer walking to Hawaii.)

  18. ncpradmin says:

    Hi Jeez–

Everbody’s in. But if you win and don’t want the prize, you can just give it to me. I can’t win, even though I did donate in this drive. Damn rules.
