A worm question
Canton, and much of the North Country I think, got its first really nice warm spring rain last night. We heard our first peepers Friday night, signaling (loudly) that the reproductive cycle has begun again in the wetlands and vernal pools. We will soon watch the countryside green-up.
Here’s a thing I’ve never seen before, and I’m curious. Maybe some biologist out there can help. When I got out of my car this morning in the semi-dark , I smelled that familiar earthworm smell. They’re out, I thought. And sure enough, were they ever! Earthworms (not the big “night crawlers”) were everywhere. In the parking lot, crossing our entryway sidewalk as usual. Creepily, they had clustered on our doorstep, and had started crawling up the glass and the surround. A few had insinuated themselves under the edge of the door. Attack of the worms!
Never seen them do that before. Were they attracted to the light? Or what?
Of course they were trying desperately to get inside your house. They were fleeing from the robins. Early-bird, all-you-can-eat buffet, you know…
Most of them, sadly, didn’t make it. Hence this morning’s wormageddon. 😉
I don’t know anything about earthworms (although I have stabbed a few with a fish hook), but I sure do like your writing style.
I’m interested to hear an expert’s response on this as well!
Certainly a Natural Selections episode in the making?
Probably the end of the world.
That’s what I was afraid of…
