QOTD: Is it Shinola?

In "The Jerk," Steve Martin's character is taught the difference between shinola and...well...not shinola

We’ve all met someone somewhere along the way who cast a bright light on our callow inexperience. No doubt some wise woman or some wily and capable old dude took pity on your folly, and handed off some nugget of wisdom that really made a difference. It could have been about life in general, or about the particulars of living where you are. Today’s Question of the Day is:

What North Country/Adirondack old-timer treated you to a wise-up moment? What did you learn?

I was privileged to have Roger Loud as both a principle and as my math teacher way back when, during my first year at North Country School. He made a deep impression then, as a person of rock solid principles, (not to mention rock solid calves from climbing all the mountains a million times – his calves inspired awe in all of us) discerning judgment, and abundant humor. For twenty years Roger Loud has remained in my head and heart – a reminder not only of tricks of basic geometry, and of just how many more mountains there are to enjoy in the ADKs, but of how to live a rich and beautiful life.

ooops – he was my principal, not principle! though, in this instance, they are nearly interchangeable.
