Breaking: Crown Point Bridge Closed

After months spent claiming that the Crown Point bridge was impaired but safe, the New York state DOT has closed the crossing over Lake Champlain.

Here’s a statement issued a few moments ago by state Senator Betty Little:

“I just learned minutes ago that the Department of Transportation has closed the Crown Point Bridge,” said Senator Betty Little. “If what the inspectors say is true about the condition of the bridge, a big tragedy may have been averted. Transportation officials told me the bridge needs to be shut down given the severe deterioration of two piers that were able to be inspected because the water level dropped.”

This bridge is one of the major corridors between New York state and Vermont. There are no ready alternatives for travelers between the communities on opposite shores of Lake Champlain.
