Crown Point bridge demo scheduled for Wednesday
State officials in Vermont unveiled plans to demolish the Crown Point bridge next Wednesday.
But after earlier discussing plans to arrange public viewing areas, officials are now discouraging people from coming to view the historic event.
This from the Burlington Free Press:
Advanced Explosives Demolition of Idaho has been hired to remove the bridge by setting off explosives and dropping the pieces into Lake Champlain. The debris then would be removed from the water, and a new bridge would be built.
Transportation Agency spokesman John Zicconi said the timing of the bridge’s destruction might change between now and Wednesday.
Zicconi discouraged the public from attending the implosion.“We are not throwing a party, and we are not inviting people to attend anything,” he said. “There is no ceremony of any kind. What we have is a construction site.”
At a meeting last Saturday in Ticonderoga, locals from both sides of the lake encouraged state agencies to make an event of the bridge’s destruction.
