A new study released today by New York’s Department of Environmental Conservation proposes removing two popular fire towers in the Adirondacks.
The report calls for the fire observation towers on Hurricane and St. Regis mountains to be torn down.
According to the study, those two structures are in areas where human structures are banned by the Adirondack Park’s master plan.
Twenty other towers inside the blue line are slated to remain.
Some advocates say the towers on Hurricane and St. Regis are part of the region’s history and should be preserved.
Both structures are in disrepair and are closed to the public. According to DEC, public hearings will be held on the tower plan.
