UPDATE: Fire tower hearings cancelled due to weather

This just in from the New York state DEC:

DEC Meeting on St Regis Canoe Area Management Plan Amendment Canceled Due to
Weather

The meeting on the St Regis Canoe Area Management Plan Draft Amendment that
had been scheduled to be held this evening (2/25) in the Freer Science
Building at Paul Smiths College has been canceled due to weather. The New
York State Department of Environmental Conservation will reschedule the
meeting for another time.

DEC Meeting on Hurricane and Jay Mountain Management Plans Canceled Due to
Weather

The meeting on the Hurricane Mountain Primitive Area and Jay Mountain
Wilderness Draft Unit Management Plans that had been scheduled to be held
this evening (2/25) at the Keene Central School in Keene Valley has been
canceled due to weather. The New York State Department of Environmental
Conservation will reschedule the meeting for another time.

State officials say they want to remove two popular, historic fire towers in the Adirondack Park, on Hurricane Mountain and on St. Regis Mountain.

Public hearings on the plan will be held by the Department of Environmental Conservation tonight.

Environmental organizations throughout the park are supporting the DEC’s proposal.

But many locals and town government leaders say removing the towers would eliminate part of the Park’s history.

The public hearing on the proposed Hurricane Mountain Primitive Area plan will be held at 6:30 p.m. tonight at the Keene Central School.

A hearing on the proposed amendments to the St. Regis plan will be held at the same time at the Paul Smith’s College Freer Science building.

A Facebook group has formed around the issue here.

I’ll have a report on the hearings tomorrow morning during the 8 O’clock Hour.
