Our very own Ellen Rocco will receive an honorary degree this weekend from Paul Smiths College in the Adirondacks. Dr. Rocco? Doc Rocco? The Doctor of the Blues? We’re still trying on new titles.
Ellen will appear on the 8 O’clock Hour on Friday morning…
But I think Ellen won’t be insulted if I say she’s not the star of this weekend’s commencement season.
St. Lawrence University in Canton is honoring Chase Twichell, a poet and publisher from the Adirondacks.
But the really big cheese this weekend is Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor. She’ll be awarded an honorary degree and will make brief remarks at the SLU commencement ceremony.
Congrats to Ellen! I like “Doc Rocco.” It’s got the quirky musician kind of slang vibe that every good blues aficionado should aspire to.
Not just ‘Doc Rocc’?
It might be worth making the final ‘o’ silent for a name as cool as that!
Could someone explain exactly why these honorary degrees are given? I’ve always been under the impression it was sort of a reward for helping the particular institution or to add status to that institution, as in Sotomayors case..
