Brian Mann reporting from Gulf Coast?

Yes…but he’ll be back at his Adirondack Bureau post later this month.

Brian is on loan to NPR, one of a select few station-based reporters asked to pitch in on network coverage of the BP oil spill. This morning, he told me he was out in a boat yesterday with a scientist he’d met in Alaska, while he was covering what USED to be the worst oil spill in our history — the Exxon-Valdez, in Prince William Sound. They were in the middle of a slick, watching dolphins swimming in oil. Not a pretty picture.

Brian’s already had several stories on NPR in the last three days, and you’ll hear lots more. He’s actually working exclusively for NPR for two weeks; that’s why there’s no mention of  North Country Public Radio when his stories come on the air. Usually, when one of our reporters files a story for the network, the story originates here, and is produced for us first, then NPR, so NCPR gets a mention.

I’ll talk with Brian tomorrow during the 8 O’clock Hour. He’ll share some tape, and give us some eye-witness impressions.

NPR is putting a lot of resources into covering the BP Gulf oil spill story. Brian is part of that commitment, and as well-regarded members of the public media community, NCPR is glad to “share” Brian with the nation…our way of being a part of the collective response to this awful disaster.

Follow the link below to see today’s NPR.org article on the spill, and scroll to the bottom of the page to view a collection of photos taken over the last month, ranging from aerial shots of the spill to dolphins swimming under the surface of the oil slick. All of these are disturbing, but then I think we should all be disturbed by this disaster.
