Could national economy save North Country Rep. Arcuri?

Rep. Michael Arcuri, whose district includes a slice of the North Country around Old Forge, is viewed as one of the most vulnerable Democrats in New York state.

He faces a tough and well-funded challenge from businessman Richard Hanna.

But the New York Times is reporting that the Arcuri-Hanna race falls in one of those parts of the country where the economy seems to be reviving.

About a quarter of the House races The Times expects to be competitive in metropolitan areas that are projected by Moody’s to have had positive, albeit mostly modest, after-tax personal income growth between 2009 and 2010.

They include several swing districts in upstate New York that have long struggled economically but largely escaped the real estate bubble.

In New York’s 24th Congressional District, for example, Representative Mike Arcuri, a Democrat, said he senses the improvement but has to be careful about how he couches it with voters.

“They just want to know there’s light at the end of the tunnel,” he said. “I think they’re just starting to see that.”

Will the glimmer of better times be enough to boost incumbents like Arcuri — not to mention Reps. Bill Owens (D-Plattsburgh) and Scott Murphy  (D-Glens Falls)?

Your opinions welcome.

What improvement are they seeing? Must be something visible from Wall St or Washington ‘cuz it isn’t improving that I’ve seen.

To early to start guessing about anything.
And let’s be real. The very idea that anyone local sent to Washington can do much of anything is absurd.

I am totally ignorant about the Arcuri race, but the beauty is that I can comment here anyway. My prediction: Arcuri wins!
