Okay, it’s official: This summer is awesome
Yes, there have been some sweltering days when I found myself griping a bit.
But on the whole, this is shaping up to be the most, well, summery summer I’ve seen in my 11 years in the North Country.
My tally of swimming, hiking, camping, waterskiing, and messing-about-in-boats days is embarrassingly high.
Jonathan Brown and Martha Foley reported this morning that the sultry weather seems to have brought more tourists to our backyard, which seems logical.
After all, who could resist?
“Sometimes we call it a perfect storm and this year the storm seems to be in our favor,” said Gary DeYoung, with the Thousand Islands International Tourism Council.
“We’ve got a very warm, pleasant outdoor weather summer for all our outdoor attractions. The Canadian dollar is strong…we’re also seeing people stay a little bit closer to home because they are cautious with the dollar.”
Amen, brother. I’ve had some of the best “staycations” of my life in the last two months…
Tomorrow, I’ll report from a brilliant summer-day hike to the top of Crane Mountain in the southern Adirondacks…a summit that comes equipped with a swimming pond.
So chime in. Are you having a great summer? If not, what’s up? Comments welcome below…
You got this one right! I had to use a fan in my camp this summer. A fan! Right next to the lake that is about as hot as I have seen in my 35 or so years in the Adirondacks.
Everywhere south has been a bit too much on the hot side. The only down side is that I think it is a bit too warm for the fish, and I heard a story that a moose calve may have died of heat stroke! Bummer.
No, I am not having a great time. I work for a living.
Summer is my least favorite season. I don’t like warm. Anything above 60 is too warm.
That said, I do feel good about being here. It hasn’t been that hot. Haven’t seen 90 yet where I live and hope we don’t get that warm. I can put up with the 80’s, the lower the better.
I have seen hotter (warmer) weather in the Adirondacks.
Being a bit of a weather buff because I’m always hoping for the next ice age, I find comfort in the fact that the true north, Alaska and northern Canada are not having any heat waves. Mostly at or slightly below average in the temp department. Pt. Barrow is mostly in the 30’s.
Notice I said average? There is no such thing as normal when it comes to weather. If any day hit the average high and the average low, that would be abnormal.
Another bright spot for those of us who think summer sucks is the is the South Pole where it has been a tad bit cooler than average. Many readings have been at or below – 100 F. The all time record hasn’t been broken – yet, which still stands at – 129 but it has gotten down to the – 114 area. Just checked and it’s currently – 81 and expected to drop to – 99. By the end of the week, the forecast call for it to go down to – 101 with a wind chill of – 144.
Sounds great to me.
Ah well, a month from now the leaves will start to change color and the weather here will start to cool to what I like.
Most of us here in the Adirondacks work for a living. I will admit to some pretty hot days in the trades, but with so many lakes to cool off in and an abundance of cool water to drink i’ll take it. I prefer wiping the sweat of my brow to scrapping the ice off the lumber. I agree with Brian, What a great summer!
If we keep having summers like this the traditional all season Adirondack garb (the flannel shirt) will have to be put in storage in May. It aint right, I say!
I’m with Pete, I prefer colder weather and am very heat intolerant. That said, this weather has been very good for the tourism, the farmers, and the heat worshipers among us. And even with the hot, humid weather, I still love living in the North Country. Besides, we all know what’s right around the corner. Fall, baby! The best season of the year.
“It’s too darn hot!” as the song lyric goes!!!! We’ll add humid to that as well! Can’t wait for the cooler, more comfortable months!
It’s been pretty darn hot and muggy. I’m not a huge fan of the humidity or heat whether I’m working or not. However, it’s not as bad as some states so I can’t complain “too much”. And really I’ll take a tad humidity over the constant rain like we had last yr!
