The New York Times is reporting today that the Albany legislature’s budget deadlock is hurting lawmakers who aren’t receiving regular paychecks. Their lead example is North Country state Senator Darrel Aubertine.
Senator Darrel J. Aubertine, a Democrat who represents several rural counties upstate and runs a dairy farm that fails to yield much of a profit. He has been forced to take out loans to supplement his living.
In an interview with the Times, Sen. Aubertine said, “We’re just like any other family…If you woke up tomorrow and didn’t have a paycheck for four months, that certainly would make things difficult.”
Yes, times are tough. Welcome to the club.
Somehow I doubt many of Darrels downstate colleagues have the same worries a farmer does.
With the worries about the US Senate as a “millionaire’s club” and the rise of self-financed candidates, maybe we need more “average Joe’s”in politics.
As a semi-retired dairy farmer you can imagine pretty much what Aubertine’s financial situation is.
Note. I worked for Aubertine for a couple years and found him to be a decent guy who strives hard for the interests of the North Country (and to bring home some of the “bacon” for this area.)
