Gillibrand tweeting on DADT

(Canton 8:05pm) This tweet from Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) is, perhaps, one of the telling differences between primary night and election night:

There is a vote on #DADT next wk. Anyone qualified to serve this country should be allowed to

Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell is the long-standing military policy of not asking a recruit’s sexual orientation and not expecting that recruit to state clearly what his or her orientation may be.

A federal court ruled this policy unconstitutional last week.

Painting with a broad brush, the Right has talked about DADT in terms of military readiness and morale, i.e. “Why change the policy while our troops are at war?”

DADT never sat well with the Left, which sought to undue or override it almost since its adoption during the Clinton Administration.

Gillibrand has repeatedly called for ending the policy. She’s even become one of the more vocal opponents of DADT in the Senate.

And, with three more hours before the polls closed, she tweeted about it on primary day.

We’re not likely to see this issue tweeted on November 2nd. So, what’s the calculation in mentioning it today?

It’s not, “I’m mad as hell and I’m not going to take it anymore!”

But, Gillibrand and/or her campaign staff think this may cement her stance on the issue with core voters and get some of these Democrats to polling places.
