I highlight this story because I bet this is something most North Country towns could benefit from a similar step-up in code enforcement.
Here’s what Lake George Fire Chief James Barber told the village board this week, according to the Glens Falls Post Star:
Barber said firefighters found items stored in stairwells, a “heavy fireload” of materials in storage areas and windows with boards over their glass, all apparent fire code violations.
Other fire calls in recent years exposed similar issues, including one in which apartments used by foreign workers above a bar were found to have padlocks on the exteriors of doors, and another in which a business was found to have disconnected its sprinkler system, Barber said.
Seems to me I see a lot of fire stories in local newspapers. Would a lot of those be avoidable if code inspectors were kicking the tires regularly, especially in rental homes and apartment houses?
