Saranac Lake tops Moriah 28-19
Now that was a great football game.
The Red Storm jumped to a huge start, opening a 22-0 lead at half-time, which was the score when I arrived. I thought maybe the game was going to be another blow-out.
But the Vikings powered back in the second half, scoring 19 points.
There was a huge crowd at Linney Field, up in Mineville. It was autumn cold, with a stiff wind under the big lights, but the energy from both sidelines was pretty intense.
In the fourth quarter, Saranac Lake finally made a defensive stand and then a Moriah player bobbled a snap, giving the Red Storm great field position.
That allowed Saranac Lake to tack on another 6 security points, going up 28-19 with a little more than four minutes left on the clock.
This was the first really stiff test for both squads and sends them each into their respective post-seasons (Moriah is in the Class D conference, Saranac Lake in Class C) with much better seasoning.
Both schools are ranked in the top 10 statewide.
Saranac Lake posted an unbeaten regular season record, keeping their opponents to just 27 points all season, with most of that coming last night.
Meanwhile, the Red Storm laid down roughly 300 points on their opponents.

I taught at Social Studies at Moriah for nearly 20 years, commuting daily to and from SL. ( Friends are amazed by can’t this, and sometimes I think it is my most notable career accomplishment). My family and I suffered from my inability to be truly connected in either community, as a public teacher, especially, should be. Moriah is a rough and tough place, with more than it’s share of poverty and dysfunction, But it’s residents have a wonderful history and spirit. These are no better exemplified than under the Friday night lights at Linney Field.
